Reader' Reviews

Helpful book but missing a Glossary / / 2010-08-31
This book, which I have looked at only for a week now, is understandable. I like the boxes and tables it has to enhance understanding. I dislike the fact that it has no glossary. Also, it is hard to look up things. Not as effective as I would like in the index department. However, it is a fairly good book and I am glad I can understand what I've read after I've spent the time to read.

Hope you're not required to get it / / 2010-04-25
This book is so bad my school is switching it out after only one semester of use.

The book is too wordy. There are newly introduced terms with no definition given until several paragraphs or often pages later. The terms are not bolded in any way. Some are in italics but you're so cross-eyed from reading the small print that everything looks italicized. No glossary to help you out either.

Finding information is a huge time commitment since the index is nearly useless. There are few things you can look up as common terms and find what you want.

There are no review questions at the end of each chapter which is something that we nursing students want to help us with the NCLEX. The accompanying website does have some questions but most of the chapters I've studied only have 3 or 4 questions. Not nearly enough for adequate review.

The content of many sections does not always provide the information that the section heading suggests. It may be several sections later when the authors repeat the subject. You will also find that different sections have conflicting data.

This book is completely frustrating. If your school uses it, good luck, and do your best to get them to change it if you get the chance.

DO NOT BUY UNLESS REQUIRED FOR CLASS!!!! / / 2010-04-12
This is a book that I had to buy for my nursing class. I am a nursing student in my OB/Peds rotation and this was a required book for the class. Wayyyy too much information in the text, the font they use is tiny (it will make your eyes hurt, trust me), and the authors apparently felt the need to repeatedly use complex medical terms in each chapter, with no clear definitions. They also do not bold any words AT ALL, every paragraph in this book is just plain text. Tables and pictures do help, but there is no glossary and the index is confusing to use.

Overall, I really wish they would've "dumbed" down the material in this book, since there was a lot of unnecessary information in each chapter that didn't even pertain to what I was learning in class. Other than that, if you can tolerate reading tiny font and can pinpoint the information being taught in class, it an okay textbook.

I really do not like this book. / / 2010-03-23
I tried so hard to follow this book, but its info did not coincide with my instructors' lecture even though it was a required textbook. So much of its contents are contradictory. It states, "research says..." a little too much for my reading pleasure.
